Abstract

Introduction: In the interaction between man and machine, the human behavior plays a key role in the accidents occurrence and the risks. Safety culture models can be a base to safety culture assessments and may lead scientists toward effective aspects of organization safety. The aim of present study was to develop and offer a specific questionnaire for safety culture assessment according to the customized model in an automotive industry.

Material and Method: In this cross-sectional analytical study, a questionnaire including 16 items and 37 questions was developed based on management, individual, and organizational factors. Then, the reliability and validity of the developed questionnaire, it were studied among 30 employees of an automotive company.

Result: Concerning the reliability of the questionnaire, the Cronbach’s alpha was 0.855. In the context of validity of the questionnaire, the simplicity and clarification of contents were investigated by means of Expert Analysis. Moreover, in terms of the integral components of culture, according to the factorial analysis, this evaluation regarded to have ten main components.

Conclusion: So far, there was no exclusive tool for evaluating safety culture based on a customized model. The findings of the present study showed that evaluating safety culture using the administered questionnaire is valid and reliable in the understudied industry.

Abstract

Introduction: currently, stress is known as one the most important issue among societies which may have positive or negative results. Stress is caused when there is not a harmony between job demands, capabilities and desires of a person. Most of the behavioral, physical and mental disorders are results of job stress. The objective of this study was Validity and Reliability analysis of NIOSH Generic Job Stress Questionnaire (GJSQ), in order to have an appropriate tool for evaluation and analysis of job stress in Iran.

Material and Method: In this study, 228 members of Tehran fire-fighting office were chosen according to categorical and clustering sampling, methodology and they completed NIOSH Generic Job Stress Questionnaire (GJSQ). For Validity and Reliability of questionnaire, 20 persons of the group were chosen for content validity analysis of the questionnaire. For Reliability analysis of the result, Cronbach alpha test and in-cluster correlation test were used. SPSS software version 18 was used for analysis of the data.

Result: The mean age of the participants was 30.8 years (SD=4.9) and the average of job tenure in fire-fighting office was 7.4 years (SD=4.8). In order to reliability analyze the questionnaire, Cronbach alpha coefficient of all influential factors was obtained more than 0.7. In-cluster correlation coefficient of the questionnaire is calculated using retesting on all influential factors. With the exception of Physical Environment and Mental Demands which were about average, all other coefficients were over 0.7, which is a very appropriate result.

Conclusion: Considering that Validity and Reliability factors of the questionnaire were be appropriate, it can be recommended that NIOSH Generic Job Stress Questionnaire (GJSQ) can be used as a Valid and Reliable questionnaire for job stress evaluation in Iran.

Abstract

Introduction: Work conditions in kerbside ticket booths intensify the risk of health threats. In this research, it is aimed to introduce solutions for improving ergonomics conditions of these booths, by ranking and analysis the risk factors.

Material and Method: Demographic information as well as physical, mental, and safety conditions of 47 booths are collected through questionnaires, interview and video recording. Following, critical index was identified using a hybrid method including QEC checklist, ANOVA statistical test and innovative methods for determining ergonomic indices. Improvement strategiesfor the critical index were analysed,using CATIA V5 R20 software and RULA technique, and solutions were presented.

Result: Based on F-test at the 0.05 significance level, anthropometric characteristics and personal informationshowed no difference betweenmale and female vendors, except for weight. Comparison of ergonomic indices manifested the maximum occupational exposurefor physical-motor factors (45.39) and environmental factors (41.28). Additionally, the highest risks determined by Nordic questionnaire and QEC checklists belonged to arms and shoulders (38) and wrist (26). Three dimensional model of vender with current and suggested postures were analysed using RULA and accordingly it was found that risk levels were improved for right and left side of the vendor body from 7 and 5 to 3 and 1, and for customers from 6 to 1.

Conclusion: Vendors of electronic ticket booths are exposed to musculoskeletal and environmental health threats, in Mashhad. Relocating the booths, adjustingcounterand desk height can significantly reduce the risk of mentioned hazards

Abstract

Introduction: Safety climate is the perception of personnel about the priority of safety in an organization. The objective of this study was to evaluate safety climate using Nordic questionnaire in a hospital.

Material and Method: In this cross-sectional study, 92 nurses working in different wards of a hospital in uromia city, Iran, filled out the NOSACQ-50 questionnaire. The responses of nurses were recorded with a 4-point Likert scale. The results were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics.

Results: Seventy-two percent of nurses were female and the remainders (28%) were men. The mean score of safety climate dimensions was different. “Management safety priority, commitment, and competence” and “Safety communication, learning, and trust in co-workers safety competence” dimensions obtained the lowest and the highest scores by nurses, respectively. The mean score of safety climate ranged 2.49 to 2.67 in different wards of the hospital. What is more, the mean safety climate was not statistically differed among nurses of various age and work experience categories (P-value> 0.05).

Conclusion: According to the results, it can be noted that the level of safety climate in the hospital was fairly good from the nurses’ viewpoint. However, attempts should be made to improve it, especially in the safety management related dimensions. Corrective control measures should be implemented in all wards of the hospital for all personnel with any age and work experience.

Abstract

Introduction: Given the increase of road transportation of dangerous materials, if an accident occurs, the first groups that present at the scene are rescue groups (emergency، red crescent and firefighters). The aim of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the questionnaire assessing level of knowledge in the rescue personnel regarding warning signs mounted on the road heavy machinery.

Material and Method: Firstly, a multiple-choice questionnaire was designed using the literature and material safety data sheets (MSDS). Validity of the questionnaire was examined using the viewpoints of 10 experts. The reliability of the questionnaire was assessed using test-retest in 20 subjects of the rescue groups in two-week intervals. The cut point of the questionnaire was determined by the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC).

Result: The mean of age and work experience of the participants was 32.42 ± 2.57 and 7.75 ± 2.70. The results of correlation between the questions of the test showed that Cronbach’s alpha is 0.708. Also, the stability and reliability of test scores over time showed that the correlation between the questions in the first and second series was significance at acceptable level (r=0.698 with P-value=0.012(. The best value of cut point in the questionnaire of knowledge in the rescue personnel as obtained 18.5, with the sensitivity of 60% and specificity of 50%.

Conclusion: The validity and reliability of the knowledge assessment questionnaire in the rescue personnel were confirmed regarding the warning signs mounted on the road heavy machines; therefore, it can be used in the future studies.

Abstract

Introduction: Disasters, incidents and crises are complex and controversial issues for the industries and organizations. Organizational resilience is an effective goal that continuously helps the organization’s performance throughout business, disasters and critical situations. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the validity and reliability of organizational resilience questionnaire in dealing with major accidents.
Material and Method: The present study was a descriptive-analytic study. At first, the concept of organizational resilience and its dimensions were determined for the review. Then, for evaluating the content validity, the designed questionnaire was distributed among members of the expert’s panel and the Content Validity Index (CVI) and Content Validity Ratio (CVR) were calculated based on the comments. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined after completing it by 272 employees of the studied industries.
Result: The CVR was higher than the standard value (0.50) considering all items. Also, all dimensions of the questionnaire, except for the responsibility dimension the CVI’s were above 90%. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for all questionnaire dimensions except for the responsibility dimension was higher than the acceptable value (0.70). This coefficient for the whole questionnaire was 0.967 indicating that this index was in excellent level.
Conclusion: The findings showed that the organizational resilience questionnaire in dealing with major accidents had an acceptable validity and reliability and in order to examine the organizational resilience in organizations, it could be used as a comprehensive, strong and reliable tool.

Abstract

Introduction: Changing the national System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals to Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) is beneficial for all the industries of the countries, their workers and the general public. Increasing the awareness of chemical hazards, improving the safety uses, reducing chemical accidents, and providing better conditions for emergency response in the event of chemical accidents, are some of the most important benefits of the GHS. Present study aimed to develop a tool for assessing the awareness level of chemical related personnel using the GHS and current status.  
Material and Methods: By reviewing the literatures, the GHS Guide, available sources and consultation with experts, two questionnaires were developed to assess the level of awareness of chemical related personnel and current statue. The two designed questionnaires included personal information, multiple choice questions and questions related to safety signs. The face and content validity was conducted using the experts’ panel assessment. The face validity, content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI) were all calculated for each question.
Results: Content Validity Ratios (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI) were calculated for each question. The general clarity, general fit and general simplicity of the awareness questionnaire (questionnaire number 1) were obtained 0.87, 0.91 and 0.77, respectively. The mean content validity index and the mean content validity ratio were obtained 0.85, 0.85, respectively. The overall clarity, overall fit, and the general simplicity of the current status questionnaire (questionnaire number 2) was 0.92, 0.89 and 0.93, respectively. The mean content validity index and mean content validity ratio were obtained 0.92 and 0.81, respectively.
Conclusion: The two questionnaires used to assess the awareness level of chemical related personnel and current statue of GHS, were identified as valid instruments and therefore is recommended as a valid tool for future studies.

Abstract

Introduction: Carpal tunnel syndrome is followed by pushing Median nerve in the carpal tunnel of the wrist. Occupational factors such as repetitive movements of the hands and fingers and frequent wrist disturbances affect the development of this syndrome. Quality of life is a multidimensional concept including physical and mental performance. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of CTS and its impact on the quality of life of typists in Tehran.  
Material and Methods: This analytic descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in 1396 on 363 typists from 50 typing institutes in Tehran. Data were collected Demographic-Job Profile Questionnaire, Boston (BQ), quality of life (SF36) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Data were analyzed using SPSS-22 software and methods such as ANOVA and Pearson correlation tests.
Results: Among 363 participants, 215 of them were female (59.23%) and 148 were male (40.77%). The mean age was 37 ± 12.58 years. Among the typists, 51 (14.55%) had one-sided hand conflict, and 312 (85.95%) were two-sided hand conflicts. Results indicated that the prevalence of CTS symptoms among women was higher than that of men The value of Pearson correlation coefficient (range: 0.0613-0.783) showed that there was a moderate to strong correlation between the severity of symptoms scale (SSS), functional status scale (FSS) and visual analog scale (VAS) in the population under study (p< 0.05). There was also a strong and significant correlation between SSS and FSS among typists. In this study, CTS symptoms have a significant negative effect on the quality of life of the typists, but the psychological dimension quality of life is not to be affected by these symptoms.
Conclusion: Regarding the existence of CTS symptoms among typists who work most of a day with computers, there is also a statistically significant relationship between the incidence of CTS symptoms and the quality of life in this occupational group. Therefore, it is recommended that more attention should be paid to these individuals, appreciate tools be correctly designed, and further study be done.

Abstract

Introduction: Occupational stress is known today as one of the biggest challenges to higher education policy-makers. Students with high levels of stress find themselves lacking in self-confidence, vulnerable in controlling academic processes, and unable to compensate for clinical weaknesses. The main purpose of this study was to assess the levels of occupational stress among clinical dental students of Alborz University of Medical Sciences, Alborz, Iran.
Material and Methods: This study was a descriptive-analytic research with a cross-sectional design. The statistical population included all dental clinical students enrolled in the 7th, 9th, and 11th semesters in 2018 (n=84). According to the Krejcie and Morgan’s table, the sample size was 70. The data were also collected through the Osipow Occupational Stress Questionnaire, and then analyzed using the SPSS Statistics software (ver. 22). Besides, t-test was employed to investigate the relationship between variables and stress.
Results: The results revealed that the mean score of the students was 150.8. The mean total stress in the age group above 26 years was also 158 and that was 147 for those under the age of 26 (P-value=0.027). Besides, the mean score of overall occupational stress was equal in women and men. Comparisons also demonstrated that students in the 9th and 11th semesters (mean=161) were undergoing more stress than the ones enrolled in the 7th semester (mean=147) (P-value=0.014).
Conclusion: It was concluded that these clinical dental students were suffering from moderate-to-severe occupational stress. Likewise, older students had more stress than younger counterparts did. As well, male and female students’ levels of occupational stress were the same. Resolving this issue accordingly required special attention by higher education policy-makers to provide support and counseling in this respect.

Abstract

Introduction: Working with a computer and workplace conditions expose people to risk factors of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). This study aimed to assess posture, examine MSDs, and determine, weigh and prioritize the risk factors among computer users by a neural network algorithm. 
Material and Methods: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in six phases on computer users in 2019. The status of MSDs was determined via Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire (NMQ). The factors affecting these disorders were determined by the ROSA method, and then these factors were weighed by the neural network algorithm. The data were analyzed in IBM SPSS Modeler.
Results: The mean age and work experience of the users were 34 ± 6.9 and 1.5 ± 0.7 years, respectively. Most of years were observed at the lower back, neck, and upper back, respectively. The final mean scores of the chair, telephone-monitor, and mouse-keyboard were 3.7 ± 1, 3.6 ± 1.1, and 3.65 ± 1.2, respectively and the final mean score of ROSA was 4.4 ± 0.9. The greatest correlation with the ROSA score was observed in chair (R2 = 0.46), followed by telephone-monitor (R2 = 0.43), and mouse-keyboard (R2 = 0.42). The highest predictor importance of the effective factors based on the neural network algorithm prioritization belonged to the chair (48%), followed by telephone-monitor (28%) and mouse-keyboard (24%). The accuracy of the neural network algorithm in examining the effect of factors on musculoskeletal disorders was 98% based on the ROSA score.
Conclusion: Factors affecting years due to working with computers are the chair, telephone-monitor, and mouse-keyboard, respectively, as prioritized by the neural network algorithm. These disorders can be prevented by ergonomic modification of users’ chairs and correct placement of the monitor and telephone.

Abstract

Introduction: Prevention of heat-related diseases requires the participation of the workers. For this reason, the aim of this study was the development and validation of the tools for evaluating awareness and practice related to heat stress among the workers of warm workplaces.
Material and Methods: The various items and factors related to the awareness and practice of the workers were identified by the literature review. Then, several questions for evaluating these items were designed. In the next step, the reliability and validity of the questionnaires were appraised using calculating the content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI), and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, respectively. After that, these questionnaires were completed by 2338 employees of six industries in various regions of Iran. Finally, collected data were analyzed using SPSS software.
Results: In total, 77 questions, including 53 questions on awareness and 24 questions on practice in six groups of water and beverages, food, snacks and additives, heat exchange, thermal strain risk factors, clothing and heat protection equipment, and heat-related disorders and body reactions, were designed. The values of content validity index (CVI) of remained questions in the questionnaires of awareness and practice were equal to 0.954 and 0.824, respectively. The values of Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of these questionnaires were calculated by 0.755 and 0.716, respectively. The values of the chi-square divided by degrees of freedom (CMIN/DF) and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) in the construction of the awareness questionnaire were computed as 4.58 and 0.079, respectively. These values in the construction of the practice questionnaire were calculated by 2.33 and 0.084, respectively.
Conclusion: The results showed that the designed questionnaires had appropriate reliability and validity and could be used to evaluate the awareness and practice in warm workplaces.

Abstract

Introduction: Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is one of the most common health concerns associated with the extensive use of computers, particularly in the working environment. Since recent studies have shown the high prevalence of CVS, it is necessary to have an appropriate tool for assessing this prevalence. The present research aims to translate the CVS questionnaire and analyze its validity and reliability and assess the incidence of this condition among the staff members at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences.
Material and Methods: The translation of the main questionnaire into the Persian version was carried out in three steps. Two coefficients including the content validity ratio (CVR) and the content validity index (CVI) were used to evaluate the content validity of the questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaire was examined using two methods including internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and test-retest. In total, 240 participants were asked to fulfill the questionnaire in order to investigate the prevalence rate of CVS among the staff members of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. After removing the ineligible ones, 219 questionnaires were examined.
Results: The internal consistency coefficient and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were 0.91 and 0.89, respectively. Out of a total of 102 women and 117 men, only 19 women and 21 men did not have CVS. Among the studied symptoms, eye redness (78.1%), burning (76.7%), and headache (74%) were the most prevalent in the statistical population. No significant relationship was observed between the final score of CVS and gender.
Conclusion: In terms of validity and reliability, the questionnaire was found to be satisfactory. The prevalence of CVS among the staff members of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences was high (81%). To determine the etiologies, further research is needed.

Abstract

Introduction: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a prevalent occupational health concern, influenced by both physical and psychosocial factors. Valid questionnaires offer a cost-effective and efficient means of evaluating WMSDs. This study aimed to validate the Persian version of the MDRF questionnaire, assess its applicability in Iran, and investigate the prevalence of WMSDs among employees in an automotive industry.
Material and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 employees (50 production line workers and 50 office workers) in Kerman province. The linguistic validity of the questionnaire and its translation were ensured using the Backward-Forward method. Content validity was assessed through CVI and CVR indexes. To evaluate the questionnaire’s reliability and agreement, Cronbach’s alpha and ICC were employed. User responses from the first and second series of the questionnaires were validated using Kappa and Spearman’s tests.
Results: Results indicated high reliability which was achieved by Cronbach’s alpha and ICC values of 0.960 and 0.925, respectively. The questionnaire’s validity was acceptable based on CVR and CVI tests. The prevalence of WMSDs was the highest in the lower back for both production line and office workers over the past year. The job satisfaction factor exhibited the highest risk level among the questionnaire’s four subgroups. Approximately 85% of participants were classified as having a high or very high-risk level, reflecting concerning conditions among the employees. The prevalence of WMSDs in different body parts significantly correlated with all physical and psychosocial stress factors.
Conclusion: This research highlights the influence of diverse physical and psychosocial risk factors on the occurrence of WMSDs among both occupational workers and office employees. Also, the MDRF questionnaire, whose high applicability in assessing the WMSDs risk factors was proven in this study, is an effective tool for prioritizing, planning, and executing educational and preventive measures within the workforce community to mitigate and prevent WMSDs.

Abstract

Introduction: Acceptance of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) rules plays a crucial role in determining the performance of employees in HSE-related areas at the workplace. This study aimed to design a questionnaire to investigate influential factors on acceptance of HSE rules among employees.
Material and Methods: The face validity of the survey was assessed by ten individuals from the target population, while content validity was evaluated by ten HSE experts using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The impact scores were calculated for the quantitative assessment of face validity, and the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI) values were used to assess content validity. Construct validity was determined through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) involving 506 participants. The reliability of the survey was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha and the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC).
Results: All items in the survey showed satisfactory levels of impact score (>1.5), CVR (>0.69), and CVI (>0.79). The mean values for the Impact score, CVI, CVR, and S-CVI-UA were 4.26, 0.963, 0.944, and 0.62, respectively. The survey and its dimensions demonstrated strong reliability, as indicated by Cronbach’s alpha and ICC values exceeding 0.70. Additionally, EFA successfully identified the structure of the questionnaire, and CFA confirmed its goodness of fit.
Conclusion: The Persian version of the questionnaire demonstrated satisfactory validity and reliability. This instrument can be effectively used to assess the factors that influence the acceptance of HSE rules among employees in various workplace settings.
