Abstract

Background: High prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders have been reported by office workers due to the nature of their work. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in a group of office workers and also to determine the ergonomics risk factors affecting these disorders.
 

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, performed among 174 office workers in Kerman city, Iran. Data collection tools included demographic and organization information form, the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questinnaire (NMQ), and the Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA) method. The gathered data were analyzed by SPSS software version 16 using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and logistic regression.
 

Findings: The prevalence of symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the past 12 months was reported 60.4 percent. What is more, significant associations were observed between job tenure and hours a day using computer with MSDs (P-value<0.05). In this sense, with  one unit increase in job tenure (years) and duration of computer use (hours per day), the probability of incidence of MSDs gone up 17.2 percent and 15.8 percent, respectively. Based on the statistical chi-square test, a significant relationship was reported between the incidence of MSDs and Rapid Office Strain Assessment method (P-value<0.05).
 

Conclution: According to results, ROSA assessment method is an efficient tool in the classification and identification of factors affecting the incidence of MSDs among office workers. Performing corrective measures in the dangerous work stations (the second level identified by ROSA technique), reducing the duration of computer use per day, and doing regular sport activities can be noted in order to decrease the prevalence of MSDs in the study group (office workers).

Abstract

Introduction: Annually, many accidents and preventable events happen for the patients hospitalized in treatment centers. Therefore, the related causing factors should be recognized in order to reduce the medical errors. Accordingly, the present study aimed to assess the relationship between patient’s safety culture elements and medical errors and also the ways to tackle them.

Material and Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 380 employees working in the education and treatment centers affiliated with Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in 2015. The hospital version of patient safety culture questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were analyzed by SPSS software, version 19 using different statistical tests including multivariate analysis of variance and Pearson’s correlation.

Result: The patient safety culture was at an undesirable level in the study centers. Of the elements related to safety culture, the lowest positive scores belonged to ‘issues related to employees’, and ‘reporting’ with scores of 23% and 26%, respectively. On the other hand, ‘team working in the organizations’ (59%) and ‘organizational learning’ (57%) obtained the highest positive scores. Fifty-eight percent of the respondents did not report any errors.

Conclusion: The results of present study emphasize on creating a desirable organizational atmosphere, the need for staff participation in various levels of decision making, and creating the culture of reporting errors in order to recognize the causing factors and to promote patient safety culture.

Abstract

Introduction: Job stress is one of the occupational hazards in the modern era. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health introduced the nursing job as a top 40 stressful jobs. In this job, multiple training techniques are considered to reduce stress and stress factors. This study was conducted to response the question “Is the use of health education programs can be effective in reducing job stress?”

Material and Method: Electronic search was done using key words in Persian and English database (Medical Sciences, Iran Medex), Scientific Information Database (SID), Bio Med Central, Pub Med, Science Direct) and were found 3,412 paper totally. Articles examined based on defined criteria and 9 qualified articles were discussed systematically.

Result: Among the reviewed studies, educational interventions in 7 studies were without, and 2 studies were with the use of health education models. The results of studies indicated significant effect of educational interventions on reducing job stress and using health education models in interventions had a greater effect on reducing job stress.

Conclusion: The results highlights the importance of educational interventions based on health education models to reduce occupational stress among nurses.

Abstract

Introduction: Mercury, in different form can induce adverse effects on various organs especially central nervous system. The aim of this study was to determine concentration of mercury in inhalation and urine of the exposed worker and to investigate the prevalence of probable neurobehavioral disorders.
 

Material and Method: The present case-control study was conducted among workers of a unit in a petroleum industry. The study population consisted of 52 workers as case and 63 workers as control groups. The mercury concentration in air and urine was measured according to NIOSH 6009 standard and using the cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometer (CV-AAS). Demographic data and neurobehavioral disorders were collected using a self-reported questionnaire. Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple regression tests and SPSS v24 were used to analyze the data.
 

Result:  Air concentration of mercury was 0.062 ± 0.0014 mg/m3  which was higher than the recommended threshold by NIOSH and ACGIH. In addition, there was a significant difference between urinary concentration of mercury in the case (37.73 ± 13.01 µg/g cratinine) and control (5.93 ± 4.76 µg/g cratinine) groups (p=0.03 6). Based on the multivariate logistic regression model, significant relationships were found between memory loss, sleep disturbance, and urine mercurial concentrations and, between memory loss, moody, muscle weakness and air mercurial concentration.
 

Conclusion: The values of Hg in blood and urine workers who worked in investigated unit were significantly higher than recommended threshold values. In addition, the Hg concentration in urine was related to some of neurobehavioral disorders.

Abstract

Introduction: In recent years tend to use of natural fibers has increased in making sound absorbers. Fiber-based natural materials have low density, low production costs, and are biodegradable.
Material and Methods: In this study, the effect of nanoclay and the behavior of the nanocomposite specimens containing tea waste, polypropylene, and nanoclay in the sound absorption coefficient are investigated. 
Results: The results showed the sound absorption coefficient increases by increasing the tea waste weight percent of the polypropylene. 60% increase in tea waste has a special role in the absorption of sound waves at a frequency of 1000 Hz and 2500 to 6300 Hz frequency range as the TW60 N5 sample has the sound absorption coefficient 0.94 and 0.84 in 1000 and 6300 Hz frequencies, respectively. Comparison of the sound absorption coefficient of composite and nanocomposite showed that sound absorptions increase by adding nanoclay to the 5%, at frequencies above 2000 Hz.
Conclusion: Tea waste-based sound absorbers can be used in noise control due to the high acoustic absorption and no harmful effects on human health.

Abstract

Introduction: The goal of this study is to investigate how the development of technology has affected the industry (especially the mining industry). For this purpose, this paper examines the impact of intelligent mining machinery systems, including tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), dispatching systems, and vehicle health monitoring systems (VHMS), on health, safety, and environmental parameters and preventative maintenance.
Material and Methods: This study is descriptive-analytical research that was conducted between time intervals before and after employing the intelligent mining machinery systems. Initially, parameters were identified using the Delphi method. These parameters include human accidents, equipment accidents, environmental incidents, warnings and fines in the domains of health, safety, and the environment, tire usage parameters, the shelf life of the tire, oil overfill, fuel consumption, failure rate, mean time between failures, and preventive maintenance compliance schedules in the domain of preventative maintenance. The effectiveness of using these systems was then assessed by comparing the state of the specified parameters before and after the introduction of the intelligent mining machinery systems.
Results: The findings of this research indicate that using intelligent mining machinery systems will decrease equipment accidents by 33.3%, extend the useful life of tires by 7.1%, reduce fuel consumption by 14.6%, cut the mean time required to repair by 25.5%, and enhance preventive maintenance compliance schedules by 5.7%.
The findings showed the effectiveness of the use of intelligent systems of mining machines was obtained as follows: reduction of equipment accidents by 33.3%, increasing the useful life of tires by 7.1%, reducing fuel consumption by 14.6%, reducing the average downtime of the car for repair by 25.5% and increasing compliance with the maintenance program by 5.7%.
Conclusion: Utilizing intelligent mining machinery systems might have a positive impact on the safety of machines, reduce negative environmental effects like fuel consumption, and improve the maintenance of heavy machinery, which would lead to better mining conditions and lower costs.
